Wide column spans along with the use of high strength material (less of which would provide the needed structural integrity) tend to make pedestrian bridges, staircases, and floor systems flexible and oscillatory. Modern light-weight structures such as chimneys, towers and high-rises are also susceptible to being oscillatory. Human activities (walking, running, dancing, etc.) and environmental effects (wind and seismic activities) can induce high levels of vibration in such structures.
When structural modifications such as adding mass and/or stiffness to a flexible structure are either not practical or effective in adequate quieting of their vibration, DEICON recommends the use of reactive damping provided by tuned mass dampers (TMDs). High level of effectiveness, negligible weight penalty and ease of installation make TMDs a cost-effective and non-intrusive vibration control solution for both new and existing structures.
